“Next Gen Fabrication” Completion May 2015
My senior thesis project was to look at education and the current trend that America has declining test scores in math, science and reading. My view is that many students do not see how these subjects can be beneficial because they cannot foresee their long term application. Since the 90s there has been a disappearance of school woodworking shops and they have been replaced with computer labs or field houses. Woodshop was an exact application of where math and science skills were used. My proposal is to take back the computer labs and field houses and bring the woodshop into the next century with tools such as CNC mills, 3D printers, and laser cutters. Implementing these tools will promote the use of math and science skills in an applied manor and create objects at the same time.
Manifest is Columbia’s senior showcase. All of the seniors in various disciplines come out to show what they have achieved in the past year. For Manifest I created a poster to display my research and examples of work. On shelves in front of the poster I created an object highlighting the way it was created.
